Blubbering at Bambi

I never used to cry at movies. Really. Five-year-old Cecily would watch Bambi on repeat and never shed a tear. It was something I prided myself on. “Yeah, I’m the tough chick who won’t sob when Simon Birch dies saving all those little children.” Sorry for the spoiler.

No more. Now it seems like my emotions are catching up to me tenfold. End of Game of Thrones: Season One? Check. Gossip Girl series finale? Shamefully, check. Les Misérables? Of course. And my most recent sob installment—The Walking Dead: Season Two. Correct me if I’m wrong, but I’m pretty sure The Walking Dead is supposed to be suspenseful, not sad.

What is happening to me? Unlike the Grinch, I’m not fond of this new heart of mine.

Top 10 movies that make me cry (in no particular order):

1. Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind
2. Edward Scissorhands
3. The Green Mile
4. I Am Sam
5. Cast Away
6. Closer
7. Awakenings
8. A Little Princess
9. The Fox and the Hound
10. Black Beauty

The solution is just to subject myself to more sad movies, right? Harden my heart? Give me some suggestions. What are your favorite tearjerkers?

  1. I rarely cry at movies. But here are the ones that did squeeze out some tears:

The Lion King (first time I remember crying at a movie- when Mufasa dies)

I Am Sam (movie in which I cried the most)

    My Dog Skip

    50/50

Frankenweenie (too many memories of my own pup)

    1. Movies with animals are the worst. It's so hard to get through them if you've had a pet die. I guess the same can be said if you've had a friend/family member die too. 50/50 was a pretty rough one, too. I feel like I cry all throughout I Am Sam.

  2. It becomes more difficult to not cry with age!

The two movies that can make me blubber are:

Up, always. Never have I cried that much in public.

Airbud, when he yells at the dog to leave. Can't take it.

    1. Oh my gosh. I had completely forgotten about Air Bud. Up has the saddest beginning EVER. I had no idea what I was getting myself into!

  3. I have too many to count! Anything with animals that die -- I remember watching "Where the Red Fern Grows" in elementary school and crying in front of all of my friends. Movies with mother's who die (Stepmom and Family Stone) really get me. Sometimes even Hallmark commercials! And it never fails that my sons always catch me -- and comment "mom's crying again". It's like a game for them, can they get me to watch something that might tug on the heart strings and then take bets on if I will cry and how quickly.
